Edinburgh Christmas Markets: Not Perfect, but the Ice Bar Wins

Every year, I hope the Christmas Markets in Edinburgh will improve, but if I’m honest, it always seems like the stalls are selling the same overpriced items. It’s crowded, the food is sometimes overhyped, and it can feel a bit overwhelming. But what I do love is… the ice bar.

I may be easily pleased, and obviously it isn’t like the grand European ice bars, but it’s a fantastic addition to the festive scene.

Walking into the pop-up ice bar is like stepping into another world. The interior is entirely sculpted from ice, from the bar itself to the seating and even the glasses! It’s cold, yes, but in the most magical way, and sipping a cocktail there feels like a proper festive treat.

Thermal capes and gloves are provided to keep you warm, and somehow the chill makes the drinks taste even better.

Even if the markets themselves aren’t the star of the show, the ice bar alone makes it worth a visit. It’s quirky, unique, and perfect for snapping a festive photo (or ten).

Pro tip: Book ahead, the ice bar is very popular, and you don’t want to miss out.

For anyone heading to Edinburgh for a winter wander, go for the lights, the atmosphere, and definitely the ice bar, because sometimes it’s the unexpected experiences that leave the best memories.

In 2025, we paid £22 for a 30-minute session and 2 drinks each (more than enough if you ask me)
