If you're a fan of local legends, eerie tales, and stepping back in time, let me tell you about a free walking tour I recently did at Kirk of Calder, and it was absolutely fascinating...not just because I am not born and bred here either.
Nestled in Mid Calder, this historic church is more than just a beautiful building, it’s the backdrop to some dark chapters in Scottish history, including the witch hunts of the 16th and 17th centuries.
During the tour, we wandered through the grounds and surrounding area, learning about the iconic names who are buried here and, more importantly, the real people accused of witchcraft, the trials they faced, and the tragic fates many of them met. The guide brought it all to life with powerful storytelling, revealing how fear, superstition, and power shaped the witch craze right here in West Lothian.
It wasn’t just about the witch hunts either, you get a real sense of the area's rich local history, from the church’s role in the community to how everyday life looked centuries ago. I left with a mix of chills, curiosity, and respect for the stories of those who came before us.
Best of all? It’s totally free to join, making it a great way to spend an afternoon if you’re in the area and fancy something a bit different (and slightly spooky).
Pro Tip: Wear comfy shoes, bring a jacket (it’s Scotland after all!), and maybe have a wee explore of Mid Calder village after, there’s plenty of charm to discover.
